When Becky G’s single, “Chandelier,” launched on April 21, fans around the world were in rare agreement that it was very good. The song is about a love that is more than just a fairy tale, and to us, that’s what matters most. The two that Becky and I had were not on a date, not in a relationship, and not a boyfriend and girlfriend. We were friends. Friends for a lifetime. Friends that were meant to be together. Together forever.
As we prepared to release our debut album, “Lights,” Becky took some time to explain to fans who are new to her why she chose to call the album “Lights,” instead of the more traditional “Love” or “Love Story.”
Becky G: First and foremost, I want people to know that this is my first love.
I never thought to call the album “Lights” because I’m not from the ’90s or the ’00s—I’m from the ’90s, and I’m from the ’90s, and I didn’t know where else to go. I like the old school way. But I felt like, from the beginning, that it was just such a fresh place to go [for] the first time. And a little bit of a different type of song. And so that was just really [the] first part of my decision process for what to call the song. It’s not just “Lights,” it’s “Lights.” It was a conscious decision to make that statement and to say that it’s very important to me personally that it be a statement that’s from the heart.
