Corden’s New York City Restaurants: The Rookery, The Rookery, and the New York City Neighborhoods

James Corden is welcome to return to New York restaurant scene after 14 years of running one of his first restaurants, where he served celebrity customers like Madonna and Mariah Carey.

Corden is the executive chef and co-owner of Cordo’s, a 1,500-square-foot spot in Manhattan’s theater district and the first of his two restaurants in New York City.

He left the fast-casual dining segment in 2004 after his first location, a restaurant in Midtown, burned down. Corden said the New York restaurant scene is “somewhere between an open buffet and a full-on restaurant,” so he wanted to bring back his Midtown concept.

“I’m not going to say that I think it’s a hit now, but New York is one of my favorite cities,” he said in a press release on Wednesday. “I had a great time when I was a guest earlier this year at the White House and I’m excited to be back there working with the staff at Cordo’s.”

Corden closed the Midtown restaurant in the fall of 2016 and opened up Cordo’s in September 2016 in the theater district.

In addition to being a part owner of restaurant chains such as Chili’s and Pizza Hut, Corden owns Gristedes and the iconic Boston Red Sox. Cordo’s shares space with The Rookery, another restaurant from his family business, which he opened in June 2016.

We also talked with Corden about his love for wine and food and what his favorite New York City neighborhoods to dine in are. Check out our conversation with him below.

How did you land in New York City?

When I moved to New York, I lived in Boston for seven years. That’s when I got a job working at Chili’s in Cambridge, and my boss is the owner of Boston Red Sox
